With a population hovering around 100,000 people, Carlsbad offers the charm of a small town. The beachfront community is within a short drive of San Diego’s northern city limits using Interstate 5 and is characterized by many community activities such as free concerts in the park. Nearly half of the city’s land is set aside for public open space, including beaches, trails and lagoons.
The majority of beaches in the city are both owned and managed by the California State Parks Department, including Carlsbad State Beach and South Carlsbad State Beach. Beaches north of Pine Avenue are classified as North Carlsbad Beaches and are co-owned by the state of California and private property owners. All of the beaches in Carlsbad are open to the public.
In addition to being a 30 minute drive from San Diego’s many attractions, such as SeaWorld and The San Diego Zoo, it also hosts its own major theme park – Legoland. One of only two Legoland’s in the United States, the Carlsbad park has upwards of 60 rides and shows including roller coasters and over-sized Lego models.
